Are Furnace Maintenance Plans Worth It?

Furnace maintenance plans are a great way to keep your HVAC equipment in top shape. Routine maintenance is a great way to make sure your furnace is operating as efficiently as possible, allows techs to find and fix small issues before they become big problems and can even extend the life of your furnace.

Plans make scheduling that maintenance easy and hassle free. At Home Heating & Cooling, some HVAC maintenance plans also include discounts on services. We have multiple packages, so there’s sure to be one that meets your needs and budget.

How Often Should I Change My Furnace Air Filter?

Furnace filters are an important way to provide healthy indoor air quality in your home. As your furnace runs in the winter, its air filter is constantly filtering airborne contaminants from the air that circulates through your home. They come in a variety of filtration levels, but many trap and remove dust, dirt, pet dander and pet hair. Some higher-quality filters also remove smoke and viruses.

Because filters strain so many things from your air, they can quickly become dirty. A filter that is clogged with dirt, hair or other debris loses its effectiveness. That’s why it’s recommended to check your furnace filter monthly to see if it’s dirty, and change the filter every 30-90 days.

What’s the Best Furnace Filter?

What furnace filter is best is different for everyone because each home has unique needs. Generally speaking, furnaces with a higher Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating are better at trapping and removing airborne contaminants. Residential furnace filters usually have MERV ratings between 1-16, with higher values able to catch and remove the tiniest particles.

Should you use a furnace filter with the highest MERV rating possible? Maybe, maybe not. That’s because furnaces need to work harder to push air through filters with extremely high MERV ratings. For that reason, the best furnace filter is one that meets your needs but is not overly restrictive to airflow. While buying an air filter with an extremely high MERV rating may be necessary for households with family members who have certain health conditions or sensitivities, it may not be necessary for everyone.

The experts at Home Heating & Cooling are happy to evaluate your home’s needs and recommend the best furnace filter for your family.
