How Can Pets Have A Big Affect On HVAC Systems

Pets are a part of our lives. As much as we love our pets, they come with lots of advantages and disadvantages. Pets hair and dandruff can hurt your HVAC system and acknowledging this fact will help you take the necessary actions to take care of your system and ensure it functions efficiently. Heating ventilation and air conditioning, or HVAC, provides indoor air quality from the fresh outdoor air.

Change Filters Frequently

If you own a pet, be it furry or feathery, it will shed hair and dander (small pieces of skin from animals that float in the air), which will land on the HVAC filter. The effect of this is that HVAC unit filters will be clogged, and the airflow can be blocked as well. The inside of the system gets dirty.

To solve the issue, replace the filter monthly, or use a filter that is reusable and washable. In a non-pet home, you can change filters every three months, but if you have a furry puppy in the house, change the filter each month because of the fur. It may benefit you to use a HEPA filter which can trap the tiniest dander from your pet.

Groom and Brush Your Pet

Cleaning your pet will go a long way in protecting your HVAC system. Pets with fur tend to shed it routinely so don't wait until it sheds the fur and dander to clean it. Grooming it before will ensure that there will not be a lot of loose hair laying around in your house. Professional grooming of your pet is essential to the health of the entire family and your pet. Therefore, make a point to brush your furry baby often.

Clean and Vacuum Your House

Cleaning and vacuuming your home ensures that less hair or dander is laying around your house. Thus, it will not be caught up in the filter of your heating & cooling system. When the filter is functioning normally, the lifespan of your system is prolonged, and it even cuts down on your electricity bill saving you money.

Cover All Electric Wires and the Outdoor Unit of the HVAC System

Pets, especially dogs, like chewing things. Therefore, you should ensure that all electric wires are enclosed and protected. By enclosing the electrical wires, the dog is protected from electric shock if they bite the electric wire. The above measure also protects the electrical wires from damage. The outdoor unit of your system should also be covered to ensure that if the pet can access its location, they will not tamper with it.

Many pets have been known to urinate and mark their spot on outdoor AC units. Dog urine can damage the unit. If the pet accesses the outdoor unit and pees on it, the inner parts will eventually rust, therefore, destroying the system.

Your pet can also be injured while playing around with it. If the pet lays close to it, the system may accumulate the dog's fur, therefore, interfering with how it runs. It would be best if you covered it in a way that only allows air to get in, preventing the external debris from contacting the unit.

Clean Ductwork Occasionally

During your routine maintenance of the HVAC system, also ensure that your duct system or ductwork is checked as well. Ductwork is a passage for delivering and removing air in your HVAC system. With time hair, debris, and dust build up affecting its how well it provides air to the rest of the house. Ensure it is cleaned out during the maintenance, which will improve the quality of air in your household.
